Turkey visa for Gulf citizens

According to Turkey’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, ordinary passport holders from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Bahrain are visa-exempt for up to 90 days in any 180 days. Kuwaiti citizens have the same 90 days within the last 180 days, and Qatari citizens can make tourist trips of up to 90 days within six months of first entry.

The one rule families forget is passport validity: Turkish law asks for a passport valid at least 60 days beyond your permitted stay, which means 150 days for a full 90-day stay. The ministry recommends six months from arrival, so check the children’s passports too.

Expat residents of the Gulf follow the rules for their own nationality, not their residence. Check the ministry’s country list before you book.

Trabzon weather: why it works in summer

The Turkish State Meteorological Service’s long-term averages for Trabzon city:

MonthAverage highAverage low
June24.5 C17.6 C
July27.5 C20.6 C
August28.1 C21.2 C

The highlands such as Uzungol and Ayder are higher and cooler, and the Black Sea coast is famously green because it rains often. Expect mist in the mountains and pack light jackets and umbrellas along with summer clothes.

Getting to Trabzon from the Gulf

Trabzon Airport sits right next to the city. During the summer season, direct flights between Riyadh and Trabzon have been operated by carriers such as flynas, flyadeal and Pegasus. From the UAE, Qatar or Kuwait, the usual route is a connection through Istanbul. Summer school holidays are peak season: book flights and lake-view hotels early.

6-day Trabzon trip plan

Day 1: Arrive in Trabzon

Settle in, then walk around Meydan Park in the city centre and the waterfront. Try kuymak, the region’s buttery cheese and corn dish, for dinner.

Day 2: Sumela Monastery and Hamsikoy

Drive into the Altindere Valley to Sumela Monastery, built into a cliff face high above the forest. It reopened to visitors in 2020 after restoration; check the opening hours before you go and expect a walk uphill from the car park. On the way back, stop in Hamsikoy for its famous rice pudding.

Day 3: Uzungol

Head to Uzungol in the Caykara district, the region’s most visited nature spot: a long lake with a mosque on its shore, wooden hotels and trout restaurants. Allow about two hours each way by road, or better, stay a night by the lake.

Day 4: Uzungol highlands

Take a jeep up to the highland pastures above the lake for views and picnics, or simply walk the lakeside path and let the children feed the ducks. Evenings here are cool, even in August.

Day 5: Ayder or Rize tea gardens

Drive east towards Rize, Turkey’s tea capital, and visit the hillside tea gardens. Families with more energy can continue to the Ayder plateau, with its waterfall and wooden chalets (a long day; an overnight is more comfortable).

Day 6: Shopping and fly home

Pick up hazelnuts, Black Sea honey and tea in Trabzon’s bazaar before your flight.

Family tips for Trabzon

  • Hire a car with a driver. Mountain roads are narrow and winding, and drivers know where to stop for photos and waterfalls.
  • Stay in two bases. Two or three nights in Trabzon and two in Uzungol cuts the driving.
  • Bring motion sickness tablets for children on mountain days.
  • Prayer is easy: mosques are everywhere, including right on the shore at Uzungol.
